Ever heard the saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all?” My mom loved to quote that line from Disney’s classic movie, Bambi. Our miniature dachshund, Luna, seems to have taken it to heart—or should I say paw?
The other day, Luna found herself a backyard buddy! Or so she thought. This tiny Thumper kept hopping away, and Luna would gingerly trot over, and bring the baby bunny back. It was adorable until I decided the poor bun needed a break and called Luna inside.
Luna’s one year old now and just went through her first heat. Whether it’s her hound heritage or some motherly instinct, she just loves chasing after little critters. My husband and I opted to delay Luna’s spaying to let her fully mature. Although she is full-sized now, those extra reproductive hormones will help her legs, chest, and face finish growing by the time she is two years old. This decision helps ward off ligament issues, hip dysplasia, and urinary tract infections.
Our little doxie also referred to as a badger dog, tips the scales at 9.5 pounds. That’s small compared to full-sized dachshunds, which can weigh a hefty 32 pounds. Luna’s sweet and timid nature makes her the perfect toy breed—thankfully, she’s gentle enough not to gobble up her bunny friend!
Luna is in loaf mode sniffing the bunny on his hind legs. Can this investigation scene get any cuter?
