For over a decade, I’ve been tinkering with my HLC logo—trying to make it ooze creativity, wit, and a modern edge. Just the other day, I felt a new spark of excitement about my branding. Armed with my trusty Mirado Black Warrior pencil and an old scrap of mail, I started sketching.
At first, my logo included my maiden name, and at one point, I even used a paw print because, well, I love animals! Then it morphed into a paintbrush, which eventually gave way to a spikey holly leaf… but nothing quite clicked.
Thankfully, marrying into the Cameron name allowed me to keep “HLC” as part of my artistic identity. I wanted something minimalistic and versatile, something that wouldn’t pigeonhole me. Photography is my main focus, but I’m passionate about other art forms, too.
One of my mom’s favorite sayings was, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
So true, right? As a photographer and artist, it felt only natural to incorporate an eye into my logo. After all, to capture a photo, you have to look through the camera’s lens—just like how the human eye takes in light to make sense of the world.
My inspiration came from a paint-by-numbers self-portrait I’ve used as the face of my artist account for years. Up close, the shapes seem random, but from afar, they form a recognizable image—my face! H – L – C. The ‘H’ cleverly includes the ‘L,’ while the ‘C,’ smaller and nestled within, represents both my name and my eye from that portrait. Beneath it all, in smaller letters, is ‘Art.’ I took inspiration from the ‘Raleway’ font family, tweaking and softening the sharp edges to make the letters feel more personal. The ‘L’ is playful and flowing, like a drop of ink or a splash of paint.
The colors? They’re drawn directly from the portrait. Lavender, a personal favorite, comes from the shadows around my eyes, while the blue is from the sky reflected in the whites of my eyes. All three letters—HLC—share the same color, as they form a unit when spoken aloud. ‘Art’ mirrors the blue of the ‘C,’ symbolizing that the sky is truly the limit.
Finally, the motivation to update my business cards inspired me to finalize a logo that feels truly “me.” They say the eye is the window to the soul, and the art I create is a part of myself that I’m excited to share with others. Whether through photography or other mediums, I want to bring your dreams to life in a tangible way.
